The answer is NO for both of them. Our product contains gluten, from malt extract (which is derived from barley grain) and milk solids from sodium caseinate (which is derived from DHA). BUT our Clever Kidz is lactose free.

Malt extract was added to this product as a “sweetener”. Malt extract is basically a way of sweetening a product without having to use the words: fructose, sugar, etc. However it is important to mention that malt extract does contain sugars and it is NOT gluten free.

Our DHA suppliers have added sodium caseinate as an important part of encapsulation matrix. The extreme susceptibility of these oils to oxidation and thus development of undesirable rancid odour and taste create difficulties to incorporate into food products. Microencapsulation of oils in convenient emulsion or powder formats allows incorporation into food maintaining oxidative stability, control release and masking its unpleasant taste and smell.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega 3 fatty acid that is fundamental to our growth & development (component of the human brain, retina, heart, etc). Since the main goal of this product is to improve brain function, DHA was added for its “brain boosting” capabilities. If you try to google “omega 3 DHA and brain” you will find several papers suggesting the link between children’s intake of omega 3 DHA and brain development+.

In a simple statement however, the answer is yes. It should be fine for pregnant women, those breastfeeding and older children. It is also fine for younger children, however in this case it may be best to reduce the dose to once a day due to different vitamin and mineral requirements.

Many people are concerned about the level of processing and the source of ‘natural sweeteners’ and for this reason have turned away from products like stevia and xylitol. However, we know that it is particularly important for children to enjoy the flavour of their food, otherwise it will go to waste! Our monk fruit is the powdered juice, making it the least processed natural sweetener we have discovered to date. Additionally, the sweet flavour comes from the presence of antioxidants, called ‘mogrosides’, making it doubly beneficial to children!

This comes down to personal preferences. If your kid likes it as a powder, feel free to do it. We have tried it by the spoon and it tastes good (although keep in mind that when the powder is not mixed with milk the cacao flavour will be stronger).

The answer is YES & NO. You can bake some treats for you child and use our Clever Kidz; although some of the beneficial compounds will be damaged by heat (example probiotics, B vitamins, DHA), but the minerals will always be there. However if you are looking to get as many nutritional benefits as possible, do not bake or expose our Clever Kidz to high temperatures.
